The Parkdale Hostellerie

The one time I did stay previously, it took the clerk half an hour to check us in. They did not allow food or drinks in the rooms and the floors were all filthy and damaged. This time when I tried to book, my payment bounced and they instructed me to call them. I did and was greeted by an AI answering machine that couldn't even pronounce the name of the place correctly, kept looping through the menu selection options and would not patch me through to the front desk. I ended up having to cancel my reservation and did not get my money back. At the very least, it is right next to the club I was going to. That's the ONLY reason I booked it again, but I'm never coming back.

The employees were cleaning rooms every day so nothing bad on that side. Did not see bed bugs or ants like other reviewers. The people in our dorm definitely seemed to be long term residents and I feel like they should put them all in the same room because two of them verbally fought at 1 am and another one (I felt like it was drug related talking) was telling who knows who to get up and fight him… the only reason i felt somewhat safe is because I had friends with me. If I was alone… would’ve ran. I know what to expect from a hostel but that was worse

The hostel itself was very dirty and felt unsafe. There was no deadbolt on the bedroom doors, there were Pharaoh Ants everywhere in our room which are an invasive species that crawl into your belongings, escape into your home and are resistant to pesticides therefore almost impossible to treat for and remove from your home. I booked a private room and was given two options, one of which was facing the common room where the guests hung out which had a frosted (but basically clear/see through!) glass door! Like what! Thats not a private room at all! On top of all of this, our room was incredibly dirty. Garbage left from the last guest in the corners and under our bed, someone’s clothes were piled in front of the room door while the receptionist was showing us the room and had to awkwardly kick out of the way, and just so much dust and dirt on the floors as if it’s never been swept before. I spent hours going back and forth trying to get refunded for this. The hostel asked me to provide evidence, which I did and any other information they asked for and they still refused to give me my money back. AVOID THIS PLACE.

I've never experienced an accommodation so thoroughly embracing a 2.5 star rating as the Parkdale Hostellerie. "We are not even trying for anything above average, so take it or leave it," should be their motto. After waiting outside at a locked door for over 20 minutes between 9 and 10 PM, finally another guest let me in with his key card. I made my way up the dingy staircase to reception, and when I mentioned my wait to the person working check-in, they shrugged and said, "Oh yeah, I was on my break, and I just got back." Then I was led to a room with bunk beds even though I'd purchased a twin bed. Washrooms did not have enough soap, and I guess to save money they only used one light bulb leaving two live naked sockets over the sinks. These are examples of the vibe of the place. Not terrible, but unflinchingly going for 2.5 stars. There were some very nice roof decks, and check-out policy was super-flexible. I was able to stay in the common areas until 6 PM which was honestly a huge plus. The staff during the day was very nice and seemed to care more. They don't pretend to try to be better than they are (which was oddly refreshing in a way), and they're not terrible, so if that's good enough for you, welcome. The price was right.

For a hostel I think it's quite good. The bathrooms were clean, there's a large common area with a nice kitchen where you can cook and store food. For me the major problem is the smell of that kind of smoke, but that's a issue with Canada in general now, although the hostel tries to control this problem.

They really should work on their entrance/exterior. It looks like a place where you go to get butchered. My Uber driver was concerned about it too. Interior...

This hostel was only okay. It was very loud and the people didn't seem to understand the consideration of others that should go into staying in a hostel....
