Northwestern memorial hospital customer reviews

My mother went in to the ER and discovered she had appendicitis. The staff was AMAZING. Mary from the ER was very thorough with her questions, RN Veronica from pre/post op floor was INCREDIBLY attentive and sweet and RN Kate was also very kind. My mother said the surgeons and anesthesiologist were extremely kind and patient with her. They don’t get the credit they deserve! & lastly the translators Northwestern had were very kind and knowledgeable. Surgery went well and we couldn’t have had a more positive experience. Thank you Northwestern hospital staff! ❤️

For it to be one of the best hospitals in the nation, it sure didn’t feel like it. I understand it’s a very busy hospital but they just don’t care. The wait was ridiculous. 2 hours to wait to go triage then 2 hours to go to the back. Then a hour to wait for the Dr. to come. I also feel they didn’t take my concerns seriously and I felt lack of care compared to other patients. I asked for medication multiple times and didn’t receive it until I got discharged. No explanation of my diagnostic

I am grateful for them helping my mother who had Severe, I repeat, SEVERE Acute Pancreatitis, but the urgency for emergencies and her condition especially was off. When we arrived at the hospital by ambulance, she was screaming in pain and just didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to do either. When they were checking her in, they asked her for her ID while she was in severe pain and acted like it was just a minor condition. They also couldn’t get the difference between internal and external pain, in which both need to be taken seriously. Her screams of pain were almost ignored. It was so serious that she could’ve died from multiple organ failure or developed pancreatic cancer. They then had the both of us wait in the lobby, where she was still in so much pain and needed immediate attention. I eventually had to call a friend nearby to advocate for her while the staff are the ones who are supposed to advocate for patients. Their communication is also an issue and it needs to be fixed. However, I still rate 4 stars for them helping my mother live a longer and healthier life to show my gratitude.

I have never written a review for a hospital. For this to be the alleged "best hospital in Illinois 13 years straight", I am convinced they are not including the Emergency Room. I have been here several times and my last visit was my last visit because of the care, or lack thereof, received. I miscarried and asked to have any tissue or remains sent to my doctor per her request so we could determine the cause. The tissue disappeared. That was 9 years ago. I've never returned. Today I'm here with my husband and we have been waiting in the waiting room for 3 hours. No bloodwork. Nothing. They couldn't even find the vein in triage. My husband has huge veins. I know it's in order of severity. However, he is diabetic and they should be making sure he is stable. Oh and in case you were wondering, yes he's Black (I only mention that because many of the previous reviews come from people who have had horrible experiences and they are also Black). The fact that this hospital has 2.6 stars and they are doing nothing to rectify it is a testament to their disregard for the welfare of others. You're supposed to "do no harm"--when in fact, you're doing nothing. Do better.

I thought I would share an experience with something that happened with Northwestern Hospital's Physical Therapy Dept. The end of October I started physical therapy for my lower back pain and some spasms I was having. I started going to their Old Irving Park location. I started my therapy and on the first day my therapist said they have an app that I should download, and it would have the program loaded that my therapist created for me, this app included videos that showed the exercise and also had a message board so if I had a question for my therapist. This app was new to the physical therapy dept, about 3-4 years old. In December I happen to be looking at my insurance claims in my insurance portal when I came across two claims that were partially paid. I looked and saw they had vision lenses as a service from NW that I had done. This is when my research started with both my insurance and with Northwestern. This took many phone calls with both parties from various departments which I am still doing today. I had documents sent to me to compare with the claims. I keep notes of every phone call including date, time and person I spoke with and including escalating my phone calls to speaking with managers and head of departments. This is what I learned and where the situation stands today. When Northwestern submitted the invoices to my insurance, they included charges for using the app. The medical codes translated differently to the insurance. The insurance saw them as a vision service description. The new PT app service code was never communicated with the insurance, so the insurance was simply seeing this as a vision care service instead of the actual physical therapy app service. Regardless of what transpires from that conversation, the Physical Therapy dept head at Northwestern told me they will be doing a write-off of the high dollar amount. I relayed to her that the PT never told me there were fees to using the app. Of course, they were apologetic and told me they were looking into making some procedure changes around the using of this app. I offered her some suggestions. Other depts submit pre-treatments procedures to the insurance for approval, procedures under physical therapy should not be an exception. Give the patient the option to choose if they want this app, I wasn't given that option. Communicate with the insurance this app procedure and any medical codes associated with the app. Finally, I expressed my concern about wondering how many patients must have paid these fees thinking it was just a partial amount that insurance didn't pick-up. Yep, taking advantage of patients. My intention here is to bring awareness to patients.
