Green Tortoise SF

Impeccable hostel. From the outside, the building might seem dated, but I must say the interior is very well-maintained. The common areas are beautiful and spacious, with a large kitchen where you can cook. Every morning, there’s a small but very good free breakfast. The rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable. The beds are sturdy and don’t make any noise. The bathrooms are shared, but I was surprised by how clean they were—always spotless. Every evening, they host some kind of event, including free dinners, which is quite rare. The location is very convenient—you can easily explore the entire city center on foot. I’d gladly stay here again.

Fun experience for a 52 year old woman traveling solo. I had a private room which was cozy and fairly quiet on a Sat night. Completely quiet on Sunday night. I loved being so close to everything. Walking around even at night felt very safe. Little Italy is up the road and China Town is down the road. They literally border each other. The staff were great, the food was good, the ability to cook and store food was a HUGE perk, and I enjoyed the sauna (so nice after walking all over). My only suggestion would be to change the photo of the front of the building. I was thrown off by the black building and not the green as pictured online. I passed it up multiple times driving by which is no fun on a Sat evening at 6pm as the sun was setting in my eyes. Also, no massage chairs anymore 🙁 Otherwise, stellar stay.

This hostel is in an excellent location. Comfortable dining room and kitchen facility. There were a couple people at the front desk who were Friendly and very helpful. And a couple others who were not. There is a slight moldy smell in the rooms, but fan circulating the air helps. The triple room was very small, but had a sink which was helpful. Bottom double bed bunk was comfortable. I would not want to share a group room with anybody I did not know!

Good value for what it is. I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm. Beds were comfortable with many small single-occupancy bathrooms on each floor. Large living/dining/sitting space and a kitchen to cook your own meals. Right on Chinatown and North Beach so you can pop out to explore to nearby Chinese and Italian neighbourhoods as well as have a good meal there. Basic complementary breakfast was a bonus. Good set up to meet other travellers with events organised by the hostel each night.

Awesome place and location. I opted for a private room on this visit, which was very clean and was attached to a well-maintained kitchen. I’d also like to add that the staff was beyond helpful when I had to adjust my check-in date due to my own error! I will stay here again the next time I’m in SF.
